The US Open Polo Championships 2011

Posted by in Façonnable Inspirations | Comments Off

Since its beginnings in 1904 at Van Courtland Park in New York City, the US Open Polo Championships have been considered as being one of three greatest polo championships in the world, alongside Argentine and British tournaments, and is by far the most important polo event in the whole of the USA. From Sebastian Merlos to Adolfo Cambiaso, Lucas Criado to Facundo Pieres, the month-long tournament attracts the world’s premier polo players. The world-class polo season begins in Wellington in January and concludes in April with the most exalted event in North American polo, the US Open Championships.

With its unique tropical climate, infamous addresses such as Ocean Drive lined with grand, art deco hotels and magnificent properties owned by the likes of Bruce Springsteen and Madonna, it is no surprise that such a prestigious event should be held here. Since 1994 the US Open Polo Championships have been held at the International Polo Club in Wellington, a town in the highly exclusive and sought-after Palm Beach.

Of course polo is not the only high society sport to grace Palm Beach with its exuberant presence. The Palm Beach Polo and Country Club boasts a 36-hole golf course, as well as the 18-hole Cypress Course, a so-called ‘masterpiece’ designed by Pete and P.B Dye. Ten immaculately groomed tennis courts make up the club’s Tennis Center, which offers a choice of all four Grand Slam surfaces. Equally as immaculate are the Palm Beach Polo Club’s four croquet lawns, whilst for the gym fanatics in the world of high-society sport there is a state-of-the-art fitness center, with 40 innovative Cybex machines.

Watch the thrilling polo matches from the Nespresso Grand Pavillion where guests can dine on gourmet brunches and hors d’oeurves prepared by New York City’s Bistrot Bagatelle, washed down by the most divine of cocktails or champagne.
