The Compact Car that Houses a Folding Electric Scooter
The recently launched ‘McCar’ is the latest concept in automotive design and aims to improve the traffic conditions in China.
Geely, a car manufacturer that specialises in automotive designs, showcased their McCar design earlier this month in a ceremony in Auto Shanghai.
The McCar means Magic Car or Motorcyle Car, and consists of a hybrid car that is paired with a scooter in the rear. The car is 3.5 metres long and blends the aesthetic of a car with the grace and movement of a scooter.
The four-seater comes in two powertrain choices: all electric or plug-in hybrid. To enable the two vehicles to share battery power or be mutually re-charged, the powertrain of the car is integrated with that of the scooter inside.
The scooter at the back, can be removed to create enough space to fit a standard fold-up wheelchair – showing that the car is flexible in catering for a family. You can also choose to make the car run like a four-wheel drive, as the charged, on-board scooter can propel the rear wheels of the car, allowing you to enjoy the stability of a four-wheeler.
The McCar is equipped with a 12kWh battery version which takes up to 6 hours to fully recharge. It has a range of 93 miles, with a top speed of 52mph. There is also a 8kWh plug-in hybrid version that travels around 31 miles on electric power, and 373 miles on both petrol and battery.
This version has a top speed of 80mph and a recharge time of 2 hours. The scooter travels with a speed of 18mph, with a range of 18 miles – requiring a 2 hour charge.
Geely is regarded as one of the future automotive powerhouses of the global automotive market. With the pressing dilemmas of air pollution and urban congestion caused by China’s threatening traffic and increasing population, the Geely McCar is tipped to be the car of the future and a hot seller in the Chinese market.
