Oheka Castle – A unique blend of luxury, history and golf
If you enjoy playing golf, love French-style Chateaux and fancy sleeping like royalty, why not visit America’s grandest and most luxurious castle – Oheka Castle, on Long Island’s Gold Coast.
Grandly poised on 23-acres of immaculately pruned grounds is America’s second largest private residence. This magnificent estate dates back to the early 1900s, and took 23 years to restore back to the grandeur its noble residents, guests and servants of the early 20th century would have been accustomed to.
So grand is this mansion and so impressive is its history that tours of the estate are put on throughout the day, offering visitors the chance to be acquainted with the castle and its rich and vibrant history. Although it is when you stay at Oheka Castle when one really appreciates its true ‘je ne sais quoi’. Inspired by the elegance and grandeur of the mighty chateaux of France and the extravagance of the Roaring Twenties, each of Oheka Castle’s many open and airy rooms are decorated with the most elaborate or furnishings and antiques.
Although Oheka cleverly blends the tradition and exquisiteness of the early 20th century, with charming European luxury and with many state-of-the-art and ultra-modern features. Guests can visualize what royal living would have been like more than a century ago by relaxing with a book or glass of wine next to a roaring fire in the estate’s stately library before retiring into the magnificent dining hall for a sensational gourmet dinner. Visitors are then riveted straight into the 21st century, by-passing the years in-between, by working out in the castle’s avant-garde fitness centre or playing a round of golf on one of the most prestigious golf courses in America.
It was in 1919 when Oheka Castle commenced its love-affair with golf when Otto Kahn, the legendary investment banker, collector, philanthropist and patron of arts, commissioned Seth Raynor, a world renowned golf architect to design a golf course at the mansion. The course was re-designed in 1968 by an equally as exalted figure in the world of golf architecture, Robert Trent Jones. Given its illustrious history, it is only natural that the Oheka golf course went into partnership with the highly prestigious and private members only Cold Spring Country Club, and is considered one of the greatest private estate courses in the whole of the US.
