It was understandable and somewhat predictable when a Lexus SC430 sports car on display in Taiwan, was decked out with more than 300,000 Swarovski crystals only to become known as the “Jewel of the Lexus”.

The name ‘Tata Motor Nano’ hardly invokes feelings of lavishness and opulence, although the days of dismissing the ‘cheapest car in the world’ as an economical and ‘sensible’ car, are about to be numbered, when its mundane exterior is bejeweled in head to toe gold.

Cars bedizened in gold, dripping with crystals and diamonds will never fail to cause a stir, regardless of whether, when naked of such extravagance, the vehicle conjures up images of a vehicle belonging to a student so broke he uses vegetable oil to work his car instead of petrol!

To commemorate 5,000 years of Indian jewellery culture, the jewellery division of Titan industries, Gold Plus, has announced plans to design India’s first “jewellery car” at their Hosur manufacturing facility. The final design for the jewel bedazzled Nano is yet to be confirmed as thirteen designs from throughout India have been whittled down to just three short listed by Gold Plus, with the final design to be decided by the public.
