Orbital Technologies, a Moscow-based firm have proposed the idea of a Commercial Space Station to serve as a hub for travellers and as overspill accommodation for the International Space Station.
The plan is to create a four-room guest house that will be in orbit by 2016. Guests would be ferried from Earth to the hotel in a shuttle that is usually used to transport cosmonauts to the International Space station (ISS). A train establishing a direct link between Moscow and the French Riviera was launched in September 2010 and is set to fulfil a growing demand for luxury railway travel in Russia.
The route between Russia and France has existed since the late 19th Century and was used to transport wealthy Russians to resorts along the Cote d’Azur, but it was then abandoned in 1914. Now, after a century’s break, the train line has been restored by Russian railway company RZD who aim to provide an alternative to plane travel. Trains are the most popular method of transport in Russia and these luxury carriages will no doubt appeal to affluent Russians that wish to visit the South of France. The 12-car train will depart once a week and will travel a distance of 3,000 miles. The journey takes just over 50 hours to reach its final destination in Nice, including stopovers in Belarus, Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria, Italy and France.
