Burberry Beijing Hologram Show

Posted by in Façonnable Street Style | Comments Off

Burberry celebrated the opening of their Beijing flagship store with their biggest runway show to date.

On April 13th, Burberry showcased their Autumn/Winter 2011 collection at the Beijing Television Center, where high fashion met high technology.

A six-model line up paraded across the runway in the form of extremely life-like holograms. The show took the audience through the 4 British seasons, complete with falling snowflakes, and British rock band Keane also performed for the first time ever in China.

To carry on with the event’s British theme, British models Cara Delevingne, Edie Campbell and Jourdan Dunn were amongst those projected on to the stage.

The show featured a juxtaposition of traditional styles with modern technology, where the British brand joined forces with the high-tech nature of Chinese culture.

Burberry won’t stop there with its futuristic approach to fashion, as it plans to kit out all of its Chinese stores with touch-screen displays and Apple iPads. It aims to provide shoppers with a different way of experiencing its full collection.

Highlights from the event can be viewed HERE.

Rodarte: States of Matter

Posted by in Arts and Cultural Influences | Comments Off

6 years after creating the Rodarte brand, sisters Laura and Kate Mulleavy are putting on an exhibition that looks at their past and present collections, including those stunning designs from Black Swan.

States of Matter is being held at the Museum of Contemporary Art’s Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood, and the 20-piece show includes several looks from their ballerina collection, shown 2 years ago in New York, as well as the costumes worn by Natalie Portman for her Oscar-winning role in Black Swan. It also displays their Spring and Autumn/Winter 2010 collections. The exhibition aims to present Rodarte’s designs as sculptural works of art, instead of standard garments. The clothes are presented on forms, made from cord plastic material, that are cut to mimic the shape of the dress or tutu being shown.  The display tries to step away from using traditional mannequins, as the forms are hung from the ceiling on a wire to showcase the shape and construction of the designs. The tutus are also connected to a motor that spins at one revolution per minute to capture the movement of a ballerina.

Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty

Posted by in Arts and Cultural Influences | Comments Off

Just over a year on from his death, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City is showcasing the fashion genius of Alexander McQueen with a new exhibition.

Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty is a celebration of the late McQueen’s extraordinary contributions to fashion, from his Central Saint Martins’ Postgraduate collection in 1992, to the final runway presentation after his death in February 2010. His work challenged and expanded our understanding of fashion, shifting our focus away from the aesthetics and more towards the cultural and political messages of his collections.
