World Design Capital project – A Design for Life

“Design is important in our everyday lives, but it is also a strategic tool for competitive business” – Helsinki Design Week.

It is a modern day fact that more than half of the world’s population live in cities and urban areas.

With such a vast number of people residing urbanely, design is an imperative tool in making cities more appealing, competitive and resourceful.

Formed in 1957, the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (ICSID) based in Montreal, aims to promote awareness and encouragement that design can help to improve the cultural, economical and social life of a city.

In order to achieve its goals, the ICSID inaugurated the World Design Capital project, in celebration of the architectural and design accomplishments of cities and to promote further design developments.

Airbike: Crafted by a Computer “Printout”

New developments in technology mean that we are now able to “print” our own bike; creating a new lightweight way to travel.

The Airbike is the first bike in the world to be created by printing it out on a computer. Scientists of the European Aeronautic Defence and Space group, based in the UK, have created a cutting edge technology that works from a computer-aided design (CAD) to create a fully-functioning bike. It is designed on a computer and sent to a printer, which then composes the form of the bike by fusing melted nylon powder layer upon layer by a laser beam. The result is a lightweight bike that is 65% lighter than a conventional bike, but as sturdy as one made of steel or aluminium.

Roberto Capucci: Art into Fashion

Often credited as both a fashion designer and an artist, Roberto Capucci is presenting his unique creations in a new exhibition in Philadelphia.

The contemporary designer, whose designs blur the line between art and fashion, is well known for his innovative silhouettes and creative use of form, colour and materials. The exhibition at the Philadelphia Museum of Art features over 80 of his original works, drawings and sketches. Not only does it showcase Capucci’s groundbreaking designs, but it also presents film clips and historical photographs that document the artist’s career. The show traces his career chronologically, right from his discovery in 1951 to his sculptures in 2007.

Smart Electric Drive

The Smart Electric Drive is poised to revolutionise modern transportation, and the music group Apparatjik have commissioned a show stopping version that will take you back a few decades…

Apparatjik is comprised if Coldplay bassist Guy Berryman, A-Ha guitarist/keyboardist Magne Furuholmen, Mew lead singer Jonas Bjerre and producer Martin Terefe, and they form the thought process behind the Smart Electric Drive that resembles a disco-ball. It is covered in mirrors from the roof to the hubcaps, and even the windows have a mirrored effect. The vehicle is reminiscent of the disco era of the 1970s and was designed for an upcoming movie named Pixel City.

The concept of Smart Electric Drive is to encourage the public to start using electric vehicles. Smart’s Plugged-in report set out to test the responses of the UK public to this potential innovation and found that the UK consumer is ready to embrace the electric revolution, with 87% of the UK believing that local councils should invest more in the infrastructure to support electric vehicles.

Top Marques Monaco 2011

Monaco is preparing to host its 8th annual Top Marques luxury supercar show at the prestigious Grimaldi Forum, catering to the world’s elite.

Top Marques is well known as an exhibition for supercars, amongst other luxury items, even calling itself “the only live supercar show in the world”. This is due to the fact that visitors can not only view, but can also test drive the latest innovations from manufacturers such as Ferrari, Lamborghini, Aston Martin and Bentley. In addition to this, visitors also have the option to create the car of their dreams if they don’t find what they are looking for at the show, with manufacturers such as Maybach and Maserati offering to build one especially for their customers. The show features some of the rarest classics, as well as the latest cutting edge designs. It is also hailed as the place where rich people go shopping for their cars. Not only does Top Marques showcase the newest additions to the motoring world, but it also exhibits fine art, planes, boats, collector’s items, exclusive timepieces and jewellery – featuring a collection of manufacturers that specialise in catering to the luxury sector.
